Symbolon – Three Cards
Today, I decided to use my Symbolon deck – it has been a long time since I’ve used it. It is a serious deck and you really have to be in the mood for the truth.
Even though it is a 78 card deck it isn’t a Tarot deck – it isn’t an oracle either. Here is a blurb from the LWB:
“Symbolon is a game of remembrance. It allows us to remember things hidden deep inside which have been prevented from surfacing over years and decades.
For those who prefer a psychological approach, you might say the power inherent in the images helps raise the unconscious into the higher levels of consciousness. In this sense, using the Symbolon deck is also a form of therapy.”
Here is another description from LearnTarot.org:
A symbolon is an “object broken into two parts which…wants to be reunited into a single entity.” The Symbolon deck is a set of 78 images designed to help you remember forgotten aspects of yourself that are influencing your life from within. Each card shows a figure or scene that reflects one of these inner personae, their actions or motives. The cards have no titles or numbers, but are identified in the instruction booklet. Each one is associated with a certain astrological constellation as given by the symbols in the corners, but it is not necessary to know astrology to use the deck. Many of the scenes on the cards are taken from familiar myths and fairy tales. In the text, the authors Peter Orban, Ingrid Zinnel and Thea Weller give a theme summary for each card and describe how to interpret it in three different contexts: as the problem, the way through the problem and the outcome.
The artwork on all the cards is really beautiful. It is a lot easier to use the deck if you number the cards and also number the descriptions in the book – the LWB that comes with the cards is very difficult to navigate otherwise.
Mostly, I use it as a problem solving deck. Today, I really wanted to get to the heart of why I’ve been feeling so dissatisfied lately. For some reason, I feel dissatisfied and vaguely unhappy and I really don’t know why – I have all the ingredients for a happy, contented life but I don’t feel all that happy and contented.
So while I was shuffling my Symbolon deck – I was asking in my mind – why do I feel this way? These are the cards that showed up:

The usual way to use the Symbolon cards is to draw three cards, they represent: The Problem, The Way Through the Problem and The Outcome.
The Problem: The Two Faces Of Eve
Summary: Role conflict, ambivalent feelings, two souls within one body
You face a difficult decision, you can’t make up your mind. A sacrifice is called for one way or another and this sacrifice is too great. So you remain hesitant. That’s the heart of the matter. Two souls are living within the feminine aspect of your breast. Who do you want to be?
The Way Through The Problem: The Quantum Leap
Summary: Change of paradigm, leap into the unknown, the Sanyassin, Liberation from Religious Dogma, the fool on the roof, the knowledge of knowing nothing
You will have to take the leap somewhere along the way. You land on a new plane of consciousness and leave the old one behind. This leap always involves and element of risk, perhaps even risking that friends will think you are mad.
The Outcome: Matter and Spirit
Summary: Spirit as a function, “new age” or metaphysical, the sect
You know that your own insights (spiritual creations) are true for you. No one can buy them and nor can they be sold. They like to be self-styled – “handmade”, so to speak.

The interpretation is pretty obvious – I’m just not really sure who I am anymore. I spent so long being a mother and raising children and being a homemaker and doing for others that I really don’t know and can’t seem to accept who “I” am. Somehow, I’ve got to take that quantum leap to accept my own beliefs and dreams as legitimate and right for me even if other people can’t accept that.
This is just the type of reading one gets with the Symbolon cards – something that cuts right to the heart of the matter. This reading is very insightful and gives me a lot to think about. Most of my friends and family don’t even know I read Tarot or other cards. Many of them are religious and think this sort of “new age” stuff is wicked. It would make me very happy if I could be open about my beliefs.
A few days ago, when I took a day trip with my sister and her husband – I almost took out the deck of Tarot cards I carry in my purse to see if she would like me to read for her. I didn’t though, we were having a great time and I didn’t want to spoil it.
So, this Symbolon reading has given me a lot to think about. If any of you reading this have any insights please comment – it always helps one learn to hear another viewpoint.
There are more ways to use the Symbolon deck with astrology; however, I don’t know anything about astrology. There is also a book about the deck but it is in German which I don’t read. One could think of a lot of ways to use this deck, the cards really are beautiful and inspire an intuitive response.
